Sossena Wood, 25, is a PhD Candidate in Bioengineering at the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor’s of Science in electrical engineering. As a K. Leroy Irvis, GEM Fellow, and Pitt’s Rising African American Leaders awardee, she currently works to develop one of the first anatomically detailed human head phantoms and electromagnetic simulations for ultrahigh field magnetic resonance

Wood started her tenure at Pitt as an undergraduate student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering where she met Tamer Ibrahim , an associate professor of bioengineering. Dr. Wood is focused on developing and designing medical devices that detect neurological damage and/or diseases, and Professor Kainerstorfer is a leader in noninvasive optics imaging that monitors disease.
